Wild Petunia
Wild Petunia is an easygoing native perennial that lives up to the name. From mid spring through fall, this cheerful eastern and central U.S. native covers itself in lavender-purple, trumpet-shaped flowers that open fresh each morning. Each bloom only lasts a day, but the plants pump out new ones nonstop for one of the longest bloom seasons in the native plant world.
Reaching 18-24 inches tall and wide, Ruellia humilis forms a tidy mounding clump that fits beautifully into the front of sunny borders, rock gardens, native plantings, and pollinator beds. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds work the flowers steadily through the season, and the plant naturalizes politely without becoming aggressive (despite its name, it's not a real petunia, and not invasive in its native range).
